" Desert Wilderness" for Speedy du Jour at :iconda-speedpaint:
60 Minutes

Inspired by the Atacama Desert, which is in Peru and Chile, tough the pictures I found best were probably on the borders of it. Atacama is one of the driest deserts, and there hasn't been anything you could call rain there since records began, roughly 400 years. In some of it's "wetter" regions the water comes from mist and supports the little vegetation that can survive there. But there is also a couple of lucrative copper mines in Atacama as well, so it's not without resources. The only place with less rain I know of is an arctic desert, where thanks to placing and formation hasn't seen any rain in over ten thousand years.

I started out feeling good about this one, but the result is far too dull, and I suspect the way I tried to compensate with colours backfired and just added more problems.

great style. it feels like an oilpainting. how do you achieved that smudgy feeling? a CS5 preset or a brush?

Thank you very much. The effect though comes from taking the image into Corel painter 11 and using the blender brush there to drag and staple the "paint" around. The specific name of the brush is Coarse oily blender if that is of any use :)
